‘UnREAL’ Season 3: Josh Kelly Weight Loss

Josh Kelly also discussed the recently ordered fourth season of the Lifetime drama.

Jeremy is going to look very different when Lifetime’s UnREAL returns for season three.

Josh Kelly, who plays Everlasting cameraman and Rachel’s (Shiri Appleby) ex-beau on the reality TV-skewering series, revealed his character will undergo a dramatic weight loss for the next season.

“I lost 70 pounds after the second season,” he told a small group of reporters Thursday while appearing at the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour. (Kelly was in attendance to discuss his upcoming guest appearance on the NBC medical drama The Night Shift.)

Kelly revealed the weight loss is tied to the obstacles his character will be facing in season three, particularly after the events of the season two finale. In the last episode, Jeremy helped orchestrate a car crash that (seemingly) killed off Rachel’s more recent ex Coleman (Michael Rady) and undercover journalist Yael (Monica Barbaro) to save Everlasting — as well as save him, Quinn (Constance Zimmer), Rachel and Chet (Craig Bierko) from going to jail for having a role in Mary’s suicide in season one.

“He’s dealing subconsciously but he’s not yet dealing with, consciously, the fact that he may or may not have killed people,” Kelly said. “You know when someone’s clean sober but clearly something’s up in their head? They’re like, ‘No, but look, I’m totally fine. Look, I’m skinny, everything’s good.'”

This is just the latest change in direction for Jeremy, who spent season one trying to move on from his rollercoaster romance with Rachel, and then reuniting with her, only to hit her in a moment of rage in season two that sent her into an emotional spiral. “My first season went one way. Second season went a completely different direction,” Kelly said. “For the third season, I really got to change it up, and it was a lot of fun.”

Kelly is just the latest actor on the buzzy Lifetime series to undergo a dramatic makeover. In between seasons one and two, Bierko shed 50 pounds. While that was a personal choice the actor made off-set, the writers wrote it into the drama by having his character go on a Paleolithic lifestyle retreat in Patagonia.

While UnREAL will not return for its new season until early 2018, the series has already been renewed for season four. Kelly said production is set to begin on season four before the third season debuts.

In June, Zimmer spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about the upcoming season in addition to praising Stacy Rukeyser for doing an “incredible job” as the new season three showrunner.

“We have a female ‘suitress,’ and it’s changing the narrative within a formula that everybody loves,” she said. “It’s all these hot men, and now, not only do you have two strong women, but you have three, and it is a crazy trifecta of women wanting to help other women, but not knowing the best path.”

The critically divisive second season of UnREAL featured an African-American suitor at the center of the show-within-the-show, something the real Bachelor didn’t attempt until this past May with Rachel Lindsay. When asked about season four possibly tackling the recent Bachelor in Paradise controversy, Kelly was all for it.

“I think that would be great,” he said. “We were hoping for Hawaii season one.”

UnREAL returns for season three in early 2018 on Lifetime.
