Sam Smith is known for powerful ballads like “Stay With Me” and “Lay Me Down,” both of which appeared on his debut album back in 2014. While promoting his sophomore album, “The Thrill Of It All,” out next month, fans have focused on his new songs — and his very different look.
Since 2015, Smith has lost more than 50 pounds through major changes to his diet and exercise routine. While the bulk of the weight loss occurred in 2015, he’s continued to keep it off and then some in the last two years. A recent L’uomo Vogue magazine cover photo shocked fans, many of whom noted how thin his face has become.

While Smith’s Instagram is by no means littered with gym selfies or meal pics, he has opened up about how he lost weight. Smith has worked with nutritional therapist Amelia Freer (who also helped James Cordon drop a few pounds), and sung her praises in a since-deleted Instagram post.
According to The Daily Express, the caption read: “Amelia Freer has helped me lose over a stone in two weeks and has completely transformed my relationship with food. Love you Amelia & thank you for making me feel so happy inside and out.”
In an interview with TODAY, Smith told Natalie Morales he’s not on a diet. Instead, “my relationship to food has just completely changed.” Teased for being gay and overweight as a child, Smith says his weight was the one thing he could change. This year, Smith told Billboard he now works out three times a week, doing weights and cardio with a personal trainer.
Despite successfully keeping the weight off for several years now, Smith is honest about how difficult it is to balance his love of food with maintaining a healthy weight.
“I am always going to be self-conscious,” he told Extra. “I’m always going to be trying because I love food more than you could imagine. It’s always going to be a struggle for me.”
