WEBVTT ED: WE’RE BACK WITH CONGRESSWOMAN CLARK AND THE “O.T.R.” POP QUIZ.A FLURRY OF TWITTER POSTS SPENDING BY THE N.R.A. TO PLANNED PARENTHOOD. TWO GROUPS THAT ARE THE NATION’STOP DISTRIBUTE CONTRIBUTORS.WHICH GROUP HAS SPENT MORE OVER THE PAST THREE ELECTION CYCLES? PLANNED PARENTHOOD OR THE N.R.A.? WHICH ONE HAS SPENT MORE? MS. CLARK: OH, BOY. I DON’T KNOW. I’M GOING TO GO WITH PLANNED PARENTHOOD. ED: THE N.R.A.THE CUMULATIVE SPENDING IS OVER $104 MILLION. $41 MILLION PAID BY PLANNED PARENTHOOD. HERE’S THE LAST QUESTION, MORE THAN 150 THOUSAND AMERICANS HAVEBEEN KILLED BY GUNS SINCE SANDY HOOK. AMERICANS, NOT PEOPLE IN THE WORLD.AMERICANS.HAVE BEEN KILLED BY GUNS SINCE SANDY HOOK. IS THAT TRUE OR FALSE?MS. CLARK: TRUE.ED: IT’S TRUE.BOSTON-BASED SAID HANDGUN VIOLENCE IS TRUE,LE 88 PEOPLE KILLED EVERY DAY. WE’RE OFF THE “O.T.R.” POP QUIZ.JANET: LET’S TALK ABOUT OTHER ISSUES. KATE’S LAW. YOU VOTED AGAINST IT THIS PAST SUMMER. IT WOULD HAVE INCREASED CRIMINALPENALTIES FOR ILLEGALS CONVICTEDOF CERTAIN CRIMES.WHY DID YOU VOTE AGAINST IT?MS. CLARK: THE WAY THE LAW WAS STRUCTURED I THOUGHT IT CAST TOOWIDE A NET. AND PEOPLE WORKING WITH IMMIGRANTS, CLERGY, OTHER MEMBERS WERE GOING TO GET CAUGHTUP IN CRIMINAL ENTERPRISE.WE HAVE SO MUCH WORK TO DO ON IMMIGRATION IN THIS COUNTRY.AND I HOPE THAT WE CAN GET BACK TO FOCUSING ON COMPREHENSIVE IMMIGRATION REFORM. THAT WE CAN LOOK AT OUR DREAMERSAND DACA AND MAKE SURE THAT WE FIX THAT. BEFORE THIS MARCH DEADLINE THAT THIS ADMINISTRATION HAS LAID DOWN FOR THESE KIDS WHO ARE AMERICANS IN EVERY WAY EXCEPT THE DOCUMENTS THEY HOLD.ED: MASSACHUSETTS IS NOW WAITINGTO FIND OUT — HEALTH CARE, THE NEXT ISSUE. MASSACHUSETTS IS WAITING TO FINDOUT HOW MUCH THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT WILL CUT IN HEALTH CARE SUBSIDIES. A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE ANXIOUSLY WAITING.COULD THEY GO UP AS MUCH AS 25%?30%?WHAT’S YOUR PREDICTION? MS. CLARK: YOU KNOW, WE’RE VERY CONCERNED ABOUT — THAT THESE SUBSIDIES ARE IN DANGER BY THIS ADMINISTRATION. AND WE NEED TO MAKE SURE THAT THEY CONTINUE AS LONG AS WE HAVETHE A.C.A. IN PLACE THAT WE CONTINUE THIS.AND ESPECIALLY STATES FOR LIKE MASSACHUSETTS WHERE WE HAVE THE MEDICARE EXPANSION. WE NEED TO MAKE SURE THAT THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT IS LIVING UP TO THE BARGAIN IT MADE WITH MASSACHUSETTS.WHAT WE’RE SEEING FROM THE REPUBLICAN LEADERSHIP IN THE HOUSE ARE TWO VERY DANGEROUS HEALTH CARE PROPOSALS.ONE THAT FAILED AND ONE THAT WE PASSED. TALKING ABOUT GOING BACK TO OUR PREVIOUS CONVERSATION, ONE OF THE REAL NEEDS AROUND REDUCING GUN VIOLENCE IS BETTER MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORTS, BUT IT’S A LITTLE DISINGENUOUS WHEN WE LOOKAT THE TYPES OF CUTS TO MENTAL HEALTH ACCESS THAT WE SAW COMINGOUT OF THE HOUSE PROPOSALS TO TURN AROUND AND SAY WE HAVE DONEA GREAT JOB ON THAT.AND EVEN IN THE BUDGET THAT WE JUST PASSED THIS WEEK IN THE HOUSE, WE SAW DEVASTATING FURTHER EROSION OF MEDICAID, MEDICARE, SOCIAL SECURITY.THE SAFETY NETS FOR OUR FAMILIESAND COMMUNITIES.WHILE WE HAVE LEFT OUR COMMUNITYHEALTH CENTERS AND THEIR RE-AUTHORIZATION, WE HAVE LET THAT EXPIRE.JANET: IT SOUND LIKE YOU ARE NOTOPTIMISTIC THE SUBSIDIES WILL COME THROUGH AS A LOT OF PEOPLE HERE IN MASSACHUSETTS WOULD LIKE? MS. CLARK: I’M VERY ANXIOUS.WE’RE WORKING VERY HARD WITH THEADMINISTRATION. WITH OUR PARTNERS HERE IN THE STATE.TO MAKE SURE THAT WE KEEP THE PRESSURE ON AND KEEP THOSE SUBSIDIES COMING. JANET: FINALLY, TALK A LITTLE ABOUT TAXES.DO REPUBLICANS HAVE THE VOTES TOPAS THEIR TAX PLAN WHICH DEMOCRATS, LIKE YOU, SAY REWARD BILLIONAIRES AT THE EXPENSE OF THE MIDDLE CLASS? MS. CLARK: I DON’T KNOW.I DON’T KNOW IF THEY DO OR IF THEY DON’T. I THINK EACH DAY THAT GOES BY ASYOU SEE NOT JUST DEMOCRATS BUT YOU SEE CONSERVATIVE BUSINESS LEADERS, REPUBLICAN STRATEGISTS,REPUBLICAN ANALYSTS, BUSINESS WRITERS AROUND THE COUNTRY REVIEWING THIS PLAN AND SAYING THE NUMBERS, NOT ONLY DON’T ADD UP, THEY ARE JUST NOT THERE.WHAT WE CAN’T CONTINUE TO DO IS TO SAY THAT WE DON’T HAVE ENOUGHMONEY FOR EDUCATION.WE DON’T HAVE ENOUGH MONEY TO PROVIDE HEALTH CARE TO OUR AGINGPARENTS, TO OUR KIDS. TO PEOPLE WITH PRE-EXISTING CONDITIONS. THAT WE CAN’T DO THESE FUNDAMENTALS OF ENSURING THAT OUR FAMILIES AT HOME ARE SECURE AND HAVE OPPORTUNITY. BUT WE CAN CONTINUE TO GIVE HUGETAX BENEFITS TO THE WEALTHIEST. AND WE HAVE TO, I THINK REPUBLICANS AND DEMOCRATS, HAVE TO BE VERY REALISTIC ABOUT WHAT THIS IS.AND WHAT I SAW THE HOUSE LEADERSHIP TRYING TO DO WAS CUT HEALTH CARE FOR MILLIONS AND MILLIONS OF AMERICANS.TAKE AWAY THAT SECURITY, AND IN ORDER TO FUND TAX CUTS FOR THE WEALTHIEST. THAT STRATEGY WAS UNSUCCESSFUL AND I THINK WHAT WE’RE GOING TO SEE NOW IS PASS TAX CUTS FOR THEWEALTHIEST AND COME BACK AND TELL HARDWORKING AMERICANS WE DON’T HAVE THE MONEY TO SUPPORT YOUR HEALTH CARE. ED: CONGRESSWOMAN CLARK, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR JOINING US THIS MORNING.IT’S GREAT TO HAVE YOU IN.THE TOPICS WE TALK ABOUT ARE RATHER SIGNIFICANT AND HEAVY BUTTHANK YOU FOR COMING IN.ROUND TABLE IS NEXT.CHIMING IN ON THE HOT BUTTON
