A man born and raised in Steubenville is featured in the November issue of ‘Men’s Health’ for his extraordinary weight loss journey.
Jonathan Coffman, 29, used to weigh 510 pounds. Today he tips the scales at 195 pounds — a total weight loss of 315 pounds.
In August 2014, Coffman was diagnosed with Chiari Malformation, a condition where the brain tissue extends into your spinal canal.
Doctors talked about the possibility of having to do brain surgery. In that moment, Coffman decided to take charge of his health.
He made a few healthy choices and started to lose some weight. Keeping it going, once he reached 300 pounds, he started to add some light exercise into his routine.
“I was so excited when I saw that first 30/50 pounds come off, and it was just like a train it took off, and I said, ‘I can do this. If I can lose this much, all my life, I said there’s no way I would be able to lose any amount of weight, let alone that much, and it was just an exciting journey to keep trucking along and losing the weight.”
Coffman goes on walks, and runs through Union Cemetery.
He fits in exercises like curls in pushups throughout his day, and even has a set of dumbbells in his kitchen.
And 315 pounds later, he has a new life — a new outlook — and he hopes his journey will inspire others.
Across the United States, you can pick up any Men’s Health magazine, turn to page 18, and see Coffman’s article.
