After all that fat shaming, fans are praising Lena Dunham for becoming the skinny girl.
The “Girls” actress stepped out Wednesday night to support celeb trainer pal Tracy Anderson, but all eyes were on her toned up and noticeably trim, physique – and fans took note only this time, with positive praise.
“You are lookin awesome!” a fan wrote on a photo Dunham posted on Instagram, featuring her practicing yoga poses. “Hope you feel that way as well.”
Dunham, who’s known for trumpeting messages of body confidence, has long been a lightning rod when it comes to attracting criticisms.
Howard Stern, for one, called her a “little fat chick” in 2013, but Dunham has always managed to brush off the haters and embrace her body.
After sites began reporting about her new look, Dunham took to Instagram to respond.
“I feel I’ve made it pretty clear over the years that I don’t give even the tiniest of s–ts what anyone else feels about my body,” she wrote in the lengthy post
“My weight loss isn’t a triumph and it also isn’t some sign I’ve finally given in to the voices of trolls.”
And yet, her lean figure came in the same vein as plenty of other non-size zero stars, including Amy Schumer and Adele, who failed to receive the same type of support from fans, and were, instead, “skinny shamed.”
Here are some stars who received backlash for losing weight.
Schumer can’t seem to catch a break. Back in December, Mattel announced that Schumer was set to star in a live-action flick based on the popular Barbie dolls, which promptly sparked a series of angry comments from fans who deemed her too heavy to play the role of the notoriously stick-thin doll.
But just two years ago, around the release of her first film, “Trainwreck,” Schumer faced the opposite dilemma.
After she was forced to lose weight for the role so as not to “hurt people’s eyes,” Schumer declared in her new Netflix special that she looked “very stupid skinny,” and vowed never to slim down again.
Plus-size model Ashley Graham snagged the coveted cover of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition in February 2016, but by July, had significantly trimmed her figured, much to the dismay of fans.
One particular Instagram photo, in which Graham flaunted a flat belly, even caused one user to write, “You did lose a lot of weight. I am no longer a fan of yours. You betrayed a lot of people!”
Graham addressed the ‘betrayal’ accusations with a letter in Lena Dunham’s Lenny newsletter, in which she called out her haters for setting a bad example for young fans, and explained that the decision to lose or not lose weight was hers and hers alone.
Adele’s infectious personality has always been as a big as her soaring voice, and the British singer has made it no secret how much she loves food over the years.
So when she unveiled a slimmed-down figure several years ago, many fans were taken aback by her glam new look. Some even blogged about it, calling out the singer for past comments saying she never wanted to be skinny.
