A few hundred health care workers from across the state rallied outside U.S. Rep. Lloyd Smucker’s downtown Lancaster office Friday to voice their opposition to his stances on health care, immigration and union rights.

The members of SEIU Healthcare Pennsylvania, a subdivision of the Service Employees International Union, were in the middle of an annual conference at the Lancaster Marriott when they stopped by Smucker’s nearby office on South Duke Street.

With signs and emphatic chanting, the large crowd temporarily blocked traffic before city police showed up and moved the crowd mostly onto the sidewalk.

Speakers from the union group and other advocacy organizations criticized the freshman Republican congressman for his support of the GOP health care proposal that failed earlier this year. They also spoke out in favor of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program that has protected undocumented youths but now faces an uncertain future.

Smucker, Toomey agree with Trump that DACA needs legislative change

“He promised that he was going to be a moderate. He ran saying he was going to be a moderate,” said Adanjesús Marín, director of Make the Road Pennsylvania. “But you can’t be a moderate when you are stuck like glue to Trump and every single one of his policies.”

Smucker’s spokesman Bill Jaffee responded to the protest with a statement saying Smucker respects the right to peacefully exercise the First Amendment and that his office “is always open to anyone who wants to speak about their concerns, whether they agree or disagree, as was true during his time in the Pennsylvania State Senate.”
