More than 120 area hospital volunteers attended the Council of Healthcare Volunteers awards luncheon Wednesday and awarded scholarships.
Volunteers from the Christus Spohn Health System, including Spohn Shoreline and Spohn Memorial; Driscoll Children’s Hospital, Corpus Christi Medical Center and Care Regional Medical Center in Aransas Pass, gathered for lunch, entertainment and a word of thanks from this year’s scholarship recipient from Del Mar College’s nursing program at the Holiday Inn Airport in the city’s northwest side.
City councilman Rudy Garza Jr. proclaimed April 23-29 a healthcare volunteers week.
“The volunteers give their time 365 days a year in service to the patients, families, and staff of the various healthcare facilities,” Garza said. “We are celebrating people in action in Corpus Christi. I encourage everyone to recognize these volunteers for their efforts and sacrifices to meet the needs of the patients and their families.”
Corpus Christi council president David Hoffman said there are about 11,488 senior volunteers in Texas who volunteer thousands of hours of every year.
The council’s goal, other than to help those in need at area hospitals, is to raise money for students entering the health care field.
The Corpus Christi council donates to Del Mar College’s nursing program each year. This year Nicole Silva, a Del Mar College nursing student, and a mom with a full-time job, received the scholarship.
